The Willisauer Ringli and the bond between two homelands

There are things whose worth lies more in what they represent than in their size or material value.

The photograph shows some “Willisauer Ringli”, the traditional ring-shaped biscuits made in the town of Willisau, in the canton of Lucerne, Switzerland.

Willisau and its traditional Willisauer Ringli — images that connect the town of origin with family memory.

Known for centuries, they are prepared according to traditional recipes and are distinguished by their circular shape, their delicate aroma of spices and their characteristic firm, crisp texture.

They have become one of the gastronomic symbols of Willisau, our town of origin in Switzerland.

To many, they are merely a tasty souvenir.

To us, however, they mean far more.

It was from Willisau that, in 1819, our ancestors set out for Brazil, as part of the first organised Swiss emigration, promoted by the Portuguese Government for the founding of the Colony of Nova Friburgo.

Among them were Xaver Wermelinger and Catharina Eggly Wermelinger who, leading their children by the hand, became the ancestors of a large family line that has grown over more than two centuries.

We, their descendants, settled throughout Nova Friburgo, Duas Barras, Bom Jardim, Sumidouro, Carmo, Itaocara, the former region of Cantagalo and, later, many other parts of Brazil.

Thus, these little rings have come to symbolise a bond between two homelands, two histories, countless life stories and generations that continue to grow.

Sometimes a simple biscuit awakens memories, brings families closer and reminds us that memory, too, has a taste.

O Piano de São Pedro Das Klavier von São Pedro The Piano of São Pedro

A memory of sound, lineage, and what keeps vibrating when a family chooses not to forget.

por Tiago Wermelinger · neto de Godofredo, afinador do verbo perdido

Na casa do tempo calado,
havia um piano.
Não de madeira,
mas de sangue,
de silêncios herdados,
de promessas dormindo sob a poeira.

Chamavam-no “o piano de São Pedro”,
mas poucos sabiam
que São Pedro, ali,
não era santo de igreja,
mas guardião de portais familiares,
o que mantinha as chaves
de vozes que já não se escutavam.

Era setembro.
Era desolação.
Era o mundo trancado em suas máscaras.
Mas um velho convite,
como um código secreto,
chamou os nomes da linhagem
para dançar de novo.

A juventude correu,
não atrás de música,
mas atrás de sentido.
E lá estava ele:
o piano alemão,
esquecido, intacto,
esperando ser afinado em Lá.

Foi Godofredo,
o bom, o gentil,
o guardião sem alarde,
que abriu a porta.
Disse apenas:
“Está aí. Só falta afinar.”

E foi afinado.
Com mãos de filho,
com ouvido de anjo,
com suor de urgência.
Camilo ajustou as cordas.
Egberto, menino ainda,
fez vibrar o som da memória.

Naquela noite,
não houve apenas valsa.
Houve cura.
Houve retorno.
Houve colheita do que havia sido plantado
por Xaver, por Zina, por Catharina, por Johann.

E agora,
em pleno século do ruído,
eu, neto de Godofredo,
ouço, de novo,
a mesma música atravessando o tempo.
E percebo:

acende a alma do clã.

vergessen, unversehrt,
wartend darauf, auf A gestimmt zu werden.

Es war Godofredo,
der Gute, der Freundliche,
der stille Hüter,
der die Tür öffnete.
Er sagte nur:
„Es steht dort. Es muss nur gestimmt werden.“

Und es wurde gestimmt.
Mit den Händen eines Sohnes,
mit dem Gehör eines Engels,
mit dem Schweiß der Dringlichkeit.
Camilo richtete die Saiten.
Egberto, noch ein Junge,
ließ den Klang der Erinnerung vibrieren.

In jener Nacht

wieder
dieselbe Musik durch die Zeit gehen.
Und ich begreife:

Das Klavier von São Pedro war kein Instrument.
Es war ein Altar.
Und wer es berührt, selbst mit Worten,
entzündet die Seele des Clans.

by Tiago Wermelinger · grandson of Godofredo, tuner of the lost word

In the house of silent time,
there was a piano.
Not made of wood,
but of blood,
of inherited silences,
of promises sleeping beneath the dust.

They called it “the piano of São Pedro”,
but few knew
that São Pedro, there,
was not a church saint,
but the guardian of family portals,
the one who kept the keys
to voices no longer heard.

It was September.
It was desolation.
It was the world locked inside its masks.
But an old invitation,
like a secret code,
called the names of the lineage
to dance again.

The young ones ran,
not after music,
but after meaning.
And there it was:
the German piano,
forgotten, intact,
waiting to be tuned to A.

It was Godofredo,
the good one, the gentle one,
the quiet guardian,
who opened the door.
He simply said:
“There it is. It only needs tuning.”

And it was tuned.
With a son’s hands,
with an angel’s ear,
with urgent sweat.
Camilo adjusted the strings.
Egberto, still a boy,
made the sound of memory vibrate.

That night,
there was not only waltz.
There was healing.
There was return.
There was the harvest of what had been planted
by Xaver, by Zina, by Catharina, by Johann.

And now,
in the middle of the century of noise,
I, grandson of Godofredo,
hear again
the same music crossing time.
And I understand:

The piano of São Pedro was not an instrument.
It was an altar.
And whoever touches it, even with words,
lights the soul of the clan.

The one who heard what still vibrated,
and chose not to let the sound die.
